The Nature Reserve of Py was established by a 17th september 1984 ministerial decree. Its 3930 ha territory is part of the Pyrenées ountains range and situated between the Canigou massif and the Costabone massif. Regarding geology, two distinctive features are to be pointed out : - The carbonate and basic rock of the lower area as well as the marbles and the calcareous rocks. - Three noticeably parallel strips of quartz. The big fauna is represented : the Rupicapra of Pyrenees, the Sus scropa, the Genetta, the Aquila chrysaetos, the Tetrao urogallus, the Lagopus mutus, the Acciper gentilis, etc...
